The fear of the Lord leads to Life and whoever has it rests satisfied, he will not be visited by harm”. The significance of this passage to this article , is symbolic to the prolonged project called Fear God by Ashford Cashman which is due to be out soon following his current EP entitled Grey Tape. 


Grey Tape is an EP which he declares is based on the premise that we tend to dwell on pain and sorrow or joy and happiness. As human beings we see life as black and white, if things are bad we forget about the good and vice versa. But, what if we live in a grey area, we could use pain for pleasure and pleasure for pain, etc. 

Fokol is his current single and that’s where he is putting his focus and energy at the moment. He has a host of singles that were put out dating back to 2011 with his debut single everybody in the club followed by two tracks in 2012 namely City is Mine and Wild Life. Dumisani Ashford Mahlangu is a Hip Hop Artist and entrepreneur, He fell in love with hip hop around the late 90’s and his parents were not fond of the choice due to the vulgarity, swearwords and blasphemy yet he stated “ when it get you, there’s no turning back”. Born in the city of coal, eMalahleni (formerly known as Witbank) raised here as well, tells me about “How he never chose hip hop, it chose him” and his role in the scheme of things is to inspire people to take pride in who they are and also take heed that the bottom one today could be the one on top tomorrow, so each one teach one by rejecting trends and following and saying what is on their heart. 

As an entrepreneur, He is kicking things off with a sneaker company that will sell exclusive top of the range kicks. It is too soon to disclose anything yet it will all be revealed in time. Ashford has lay tracks everywhere from bedrooms to hotel rooms to studios and anywhere or anytime where an opportunity presents itself to record, he is happy to do it. He believes that features should be pure, organic as long as it’s not forced, All of this is evidence in the music that he is working on now, as it best describes him and his growth over the years as an artist not just as a rapper. The music is the clear reflection of him giving his heart and soul and living nothing unturned.

When I asked him where would he like his music to be listened to the most? He replied “Globally, anyone comfortable with less doesn’t believe in their art. He then went to close the interview with a very insightful quote “There’s no time like the present, use today to make things happen!

1. My music is my personal diary , I write what I feel, go through and I write about people in my life , my community, environment , etc.

2. Music is my life. Even when I had nothing in my life, I had music and my family.

3. Hip Hop is a culture; unfortunately people have now turned it into an integral part of pop culture. So everyone things their rappers now, because of less lyricism. However , I like that it is now it is melodic so as an RnB and Soul music enthusiast, I am happy that I can now combine melody and lay purposeful verses in a song. We advance the culture by making beautiful music and remember music never dies.
